Back in April, Shopify announced their new Shop Pay app. Originally, this app replaced the Shopify Arrive app—the Arrive app consolidated shipping information for your online purchases. When it was announced back in April, the The Shop app had the following 3 key features:
We'll dive a little deeper into these three features.
Nearly a quarter of US shoppers have admitted to abandoning their carts because the checkout process was too long or too complicated. Shop Pay is Shopify's fastest accelerated checkout experience. Conversion rates are reported to improve by up to 18% for returning customers after a business enables Shop Pay for their online store.
With customer acquisition costs having risen in recent years, getting repeat purchases are often where businesses make a profit. Shop automatically recommends products to their existing customers.
Shop drives rediscovery of your brand through in-app recommendations that bring customers back to your store. A user’s Shops tab acts as a personalized shopping feed that populates with product picks, special deals, and new arrivals based on their purchase history and the brands they follow on Shop.
A very handy feature of the Shop app is that the app provides customers accurate and timely updates on everything they order, across all online stores, from a single location. Shop syncs with a customer’s email to track orders and customers can view Shop’s live map view to see where their order is and expected delivery time.
This will decrease those customer support tickets“Where’s my order?” when customers are able to easily access that information right from their Shop app.
The current crisis has been hard on small businesses, and to make matter worse, customers are uncertain about whether businesses are open, and if orders will arrive when they need them to.
Shop has a “Shop Local” function, where the app will search for brick-and-mortar stores in the US closest to your most recent delivery address. It will also show if you offer in-store or curbside pickup.
A much debated feature was the shopping recommendations feature, and if the app would serve as a product discovery platform, or even a marketplace.
One of our Lucid front end developers commented that;
the app is interesting but it’s not a marketplace. It would be cool to see the ability to search for products rather than just stores. Like a cross-store product catalog.
Last week, during Shopify's Reunite livestream event (full recap of what was announced here) Shopify announced that the shopping app will be rolling out new features designed to create a more intuitive online shopping experience from product discovery to package delivery. Soon, Shopify will officially launch the Shop Channel, where you can customize how you show up in Shop and better tell your brand story. Shop gives merchants the opportunity to better connect with their shoppers by:
It does seem like a marketplace is well on it's way.
One last thing we think is interesting to note, the Shop app contains information about how many trees you saved with your orders. Shopify owns the cost to offset the negative environmental impact thats related to the commerce enabled through the platform.
Every time someone makes a purchase using Shop Pay in the Shop App all the carbon emissions associated with that delivery, is calculated and Shopify then offsets that carbon by protecting trees that already exist.
